Local Saline County Woman, Sheila Speer, will be receiving her BA Degree on May 13, 2017 from UALR as a Summa Cum Laude. She was very appreciative of the assistance she had received from Central Arkansas Development Council through the Utility Assistance program and the Saline County Single Parent Scholarship Program as demonstrated in the following e-mail: “Hey Garry! I hope all is well on your end. This last semester has been a crazy one, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am graduating May 13th–Summa Cum Laude–and I have been accepted to the MA Professional and Technical Writing graduate program starting in the Fall. I really appreciate all you and CADC have done for me. I couldn’t have made it without you. Lastly, I thought you might be interested in seeing this little bit of news! http://ualr.edu/rhetoric/2017/04/19/rhetoric-minor-sheila-speer-wins-201… All my best, Sheila”
CADC Family Development Specialist, Gary Elrod worked with Ms. Speer in the Single Parent Scholarship Program which provides a $500 a semester to full time single parent students or $250 a semester for part-time students. This assistance helps students with costs which could potentially cause them hardships as they try to complete their education. Students can request for the money to be paid on such things as gas for their vehicle, rent, car insurance, tires for their car to name a few. There are currently 17 single parent students enrolled in the Saline County CADC Program.
The Single Parent Scholarship Program will be hosting their annual fundraiser on May 18th which is sponsored by the Saline County Judge, Jeff Arey. The event will be from 11am to 1pm on the Benton Courthouse Lawn and tickets are $10 each. City and community support has been great and with the efforts of the Single Parent Scholarship Board, all the food, door prizes and silent auction items are being donated. Please come out and support this worthwhile effort which benefits so many.
